I designed this poster series for a school magazine project centered around the core question "Who am I?". Guided by Michael Jackson’s "Earth Song" and the phrase "What about us?", the project serves as a personal exploration of war, peace, and my own identity.
This project features a series of three digitally illustrated posters created using Photoshop and Procreate, designed specifically as a contribution to our school magazine. Because of my family roots in Ukraine, the theme carries a deep personal significance, allowing me to address global issues of conflict and solidarity through the lens of my own heritage. The visual language centers around iconic song lines, utilizing a hand-drawn brush style and a symbolic blue and yellow color palette to amplify the emotional connection to Ukraine.
Challenge
My main challenge for this magazine feature was to translate the raw, painful reality of war and human suffering into a powerful visual layout without relying on generic imagery. Within the context of the "Who am I?" theme, I had to find a way to balance experimental typography, digital illustration, and my deeply personal emotions into a cohesive narrative that fits a editorial format.
Solution
I focused on a striking, hand-drawn brush aesthetic combined with high-contrast typography to give the lyrics maximum visual weight. By specifically choosing the lyrics "What about children dying?", "Can’t you see them cry?", and "What about baby boy?", and rendering them in the national colors of Ukraine, I created a direct emotional bridge between the message of the song, the current reality of the conflict, and my own sense of identity.
