This photography series documents the intense home opener match between Steinbach Blackwings Linz and Milano HC on September 20, 2026. Despite a tough loss for the home team, the project captures the fierce energy and raw emotion on the ice. The color grading centers around the striking orange and teal tones of the Blackwings' kit, while a textured, high-ISO grain highlights the grit and fast-paced atmosphere of live professional ice hockey.
Challenge
Capturing live action against Milano HC presented significant technical and spatial challenges. Working with non-fast zoom lenses (f/4.0–5.6) forced high ISO settings to keep shutter speeds fast enough to freeze the players' rapid movements in low arena lighting. Shooting through smudged glass from restricted spectator positions made maintaining clarity an uphill battle.
Solution
Instead of battling the high-ISO digital noise, I embraced the grain as a film-like stylistic choice to amplify the raw, authentic feel of the game. I tailored the color palette around the team's vibrant orange and teal jersey accents and focused on tight, strategic framing. Pushing shutter speeds enabled me to freeze sharp close-ups of players and goalies, turning gear limitations into a bold, cinematic matchday story.
